'If we all hid, nothing would be different'
- 39 yr old Burmese man, smh 1/10/07
'In Australia, members represent their parties, not their voters.'
Hugh Mackay
'In Australia we no longer have a democracy, we have an elected dictatorship. We elect a political party one day every three years and the rest of the time, it dictates to us.'
Sir Mark Oliphant

Grassroots Democracy

The Australian Independents Coalition for political integrity (AIC) are ordinary Australians of diverse backgrounds, seeking a more participatory democracy. The AIC draws inspiration from traditional Aboriginal political culture, based on the principles of respect and dialogue. AIC Independents come together on the basis of shared values, dialoguing through the issues, yet voting independently in the Senate – every issue is a conscience vote The AIC sees five major crises needing to be addressed:

The political process

...the crisis of confidence

Climate change

...the crisis of policy short-termism

A truly fair nation

...the crisis of wealth-shift

Historical injustice

...the crisis of denial

Community creation

...the crisis of relationship breakdown
